Dumpster Diving!

Although this is not technically taking place in the LES, we couldn't resist posting about the last opportunity that you will have all year to swim in a dumpster in the middle of New York City. Go to Park Avenue between 40th & 41st streets to claim your wrist band and get in on the action.

Wings of Desire!

One of our favorite films at our favorite neighborhood theater, catch Wim Wenders classic film "Wings of Desire" at Anthology Film Archives, screenings Saturday at 9pm & Sunday at 6pm. 

Menu Spotlight.

We came across this post on Canwiches a.k.a "The Great Canadian Sandwich Blog" and we kind of can't get over their photograph of our Club Sandwich. Look at our little baby shine! The deal with our Club is that it comes with a heap of tasty vegginess on one side of the seven grain triple decker, while the other gets the big show, with a heavy hand of bacon and either ham & cheddar, roast beef & provolone, turkey & swiss, or avocado & provolone. By the time you finish with this guy, your belly will be smiling for hours. There is no room for regrets when there are sprouts AND bacon involved!

A tune for Tuesday.

The North Carolina phenomenon Lost in the Trees play next Monday at The Mercury Lounge and we couldn't resist sharing one of their songs with you as our Tune for Tuesday. Their sound is somehow melancholy and upbeat all at once, with full string arrangements and sweet lyrics that remind us a little bit of the Bowerbirds and Devotchka. We've heard that they are beyond amazing live and hope we can stop by! It's an early show (7:30) and we'll being slinging sandwiches until 10, so who knows...At least we can enjoy this performance in the mean time.

Batali cooking veg!

You know we like a world that is veggie friendly, that's why we offer meatless substitutions on almost all of our sandwiches and salads. We are excited by the Meatless Monday movement, a nationwide campaign where restaurants are pledging to serve at least two vegetarian main dish options every Monday, and, recently, even more excited by the announcement that Mario Batali is currently writing a vegetarian cook book which a recent interview suggests, may emphasize the role of farmers in home cooking. We can't wait! Get out of those Crocs and in to our kitchen, Batali!

Tonight, head to Blue Stockings books for a reading and discussion by author Amy Hatkoff's on her book The Inner Life of Farm Animals (with a forward by Jane Goodall). Beginning at 7pm. 172 Allen Street.

This Saturday, catch the Armchairs record release & performance at Pianos at 10pm. They will be joined by Afuche, The Lisps, and Ball of Flame Shoot Fire. One of our favorite Neighborhood venues. 158 Ludlow Street.

On Sunday, head over to Pianos for a screening of "The Shield Around the K", a documentary produced by Heather Rose Dominic about the legendary K Records based in Olympia, Washington. 158 Ludlow Street. Time TBA.

A tune for Tuesday.

Okay, we really love this band the Acrylics and are so psyched that they will be playing at the Cake Shop TONIGHT!! This Brooklyn duo are not to be missed, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear produced their debut album and it is ridiculously addictive. The show starts at 9, so get over there and, as always, stop by and tell us about it!

Downtown Lunch, the 'southern' offshoot of Midtown Lunch, is one of our favorite sites for keeping up with all of the highs (ridiculously delicious flavors) and lows (for cheap!) of daytime dining in downtown Manhattan. Consider it a comprehensive guide to what they describe as "the adventure of urban lunching" replete with forums, links, listings, happy hour roundups and much, much more. They cover such an incredible variety of cuisine, all of which is on the pocket friendly side ($10 and under), and create seriously handy cheat sheets for those times when you finally decide to brave that new food cart but have no clue what to order, or find yourself in an obscure part of the island without your food compass.

They covered our reopening ("Downtown Links (The Sandwich Shop Returneth" Edition" - we hearted this headline!!!) and included one of our all time favorite portraits of the Rizzak, courtesy of Serious Eats:

Gallery 128 opened a new group show this past Wednesday and it sounds like an interactive, multimedia explosion that will surely be worth the trip. Read their description, below:

"Gallery 128 is proud to announce rEvolution, the midsummer night’s group show opening August 4th through September 4th. Nine artists will be participating in this month-long happening. Presenting - improvisation, collaboration, freedom, fun, fake fur, found objects, found artists, trumpets, guitars, postal codes, hair portraits, cyber-violence, jazz riffs, painted dresses, T-Rex (the band)…and more. Everything is happening!"

On a hot day like today, there is nothing like a mouthful of chilled, crisp lettuce. What could be better? Maybe covering the whole beautiful bed of greens with bite size pieces of cheddar and swiss, fresh cukes, rich avocado, tomatoes, carrots, chick peas, sprouts, and red onions all dancing under dollops of tangy balsamic dressing. A Tune for Tuesday.

We were doing our usual trolling along the events calendar at one of our favorite neighborhood music venues, Cake Shop (one of the city's best places to see up and coming acts in a super low-key, intimate setting) and were so pleased to come across Luke Rathborne's music. He is in the same folky/unfinished singer songwriter category as musicians like Deer Tick, whose sound is far more heartfelt and soulful than their age should allow. The show is tonight, so you have the rare opportunity to hear our Tune for Tuesday live! Stop by beforehand so we can send you off to Cake Shop with sandwiches and well wishes.

Hester Street Fair Film!

If you haven't been by to see our neighbors at the Hester Street Fair yet, this short film will take you there and show you what you've been missing. This short is a sweet explosion of happy faces, talented vendors, summer sun, and scenes from the neighborhood, all set to one of our absolute favorite songs. Our friends and Hester Street vendors Sarivole and Macaron Parlour hold down our pastry racks at the restaurant all week long and so far people can't get enough of their organic baked goods (Sarivole) and unusual, savory sweet treats (Macaron Parlour). Once you try them, you'll see why, too. Come by for the real thing soon!
